Synopsis:
In this sequel to Tim Burton's cult classic, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), now an adult and a mother, returns to her eerie roots when her daughter, Emily, stumbles upon the decrepit Handbook for the Recently Deceased. Haunted by unresolved ghosts from her past, Lydia must once again confront the mischievous bio-exorcist Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), who is just as outrageous and unpredictable as ever.
As the boundary between the world of the living and the dead becomes dangerously thin, Lydia and Emily find themselves caught in a supernatural battle involving chaotic afterlife bureaucrats and ancient curses. Desperate to protect her family and stop Beetlejuice’s latest schemes, Lydia teams up with some familiar spectral faces, uncovering dark secrets about the afterlife and her connection to it.
With gothic humor, absurd antics, and Tim Burton's signature visual style, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice blends nostalgia with new thrills, taking audiences on a bizarre and heartwarming journey through the weird and wonderful world of the undead.
Intentions:
I thought this sequel was a great addition to the franchise, capturing much of the original’s charm. However, it felt bogged down by an overabundance of plotlines and constant cutaways that detracted from the main story. In this fanedit, I’ll focus on tightening the narrative, starting by streamlining Delores' introduction, which I felt dragged on without adding much to the overall plot. Additionally, I'll be removing the subplot about Wolf Jackson being an actor, as it felt unnecessary and pulled attention away from the core story. My goal is to create a more cohesive and engaging flow while maintaining the film's unique spirit.
Change List:
• Insert MRDb Sparkle Fanedit warning intro.
• Add 12A MRDb rating card.
• Add “Fanedit by Movies Remastered” to opening credits
• Fade in and out above text
• Remove Danny DeVito listening to “Tragedy by Bee Gees” including the introduction of Delores. (Removing Delores from the start helps us understand Beetlejuice’s fear for her arrival and creates a build mystery and tension within the story. Not seeing her soul suck also builds anticipation).
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Cut before Beetlejuice gets called into Wolf’s office. (Doing this adds to the long wait times in the waiting room as a call-back to the original).
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Remove Delores soul sucking the dry cleaning guy. (Pointless addition in this edit and helps to build mystery without it).
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Remove scene of Beetlejuice at the water cooler, stressing his wife’s back. (Removing it here allows us to focus more on the main story and the less we see of Beetlejuice early on helps to build anticipation of seeing him more later.
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Cut to Funeral scene. (Adding this early allows that main storyline to flow more smoothly).
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Remove Delores walking into the underworld office. (While it’s a shame to remove so many awesome practical effects. She continued appearance doesn’t add anything to the story at this point).
• Remove Wolf discovering the dry cleaners body. (I’m delaying most of the underworld plot in order to focus on the main storyline).
• Remove Bob arriving as Beetlejuice’s doppelganger. (Again, I’m delaying most of the underworld plot in order to focus on the main storyline).
• Fade to black for scene transition.
• Add extreme reverb to audio to create eerie fade out transition.
• Reinsert Beetlejuice in the waiting room scene. (This shows how long he’s been waiting and the running gag that the underworld is overrun and short staffed).
• Reinsert the scene with Beetlejuice being grilled by Wolf. (Now it’s time to start unfolding the subplot as we’ve given a lot of breathing room to the main storyline.
• Fix audio for this cut.
• Add orchestral stab on transition.
• Insert scene of Rory arriving with boxes and hearing screams.
• Add audio crossfade to hide above cut.
• Insert scene of Beetlejuice boarding up the office as his fear for Delores grows.
• Add extreme reverb to audio to create eerie fade out transition.
• Cut to Astrid riding her back to Jeremy’s house.
• Add extreme reverb to audio to create eerie fade out transition.
• Remove scene with Wolf practising his lines with the Gun. (He’s not an actor in this edit so no need for this subplot).
• Cut all shots for Wolf’s secretary feeding him lines on the boards.
• Retime dolly pan shot of policemen’s close-ups to hide above cuts.
• Retime and reverse footage of dolly pan shot with policemen to hide above cuts.
• Cut the cringe kick and “Whoo!” that Wolf does at the end of his speech.
• Fix the audio transition after removing the above scene.
• Remove the scene of Delores arriving at Beetlejuice’s office and finds a photo of Lydia on his desk. (While this is a great scene to help build Delores’s jealousy, it doesn’t really get fleshed out much in the original so it’s a pointless scene in this edit).
• Fix audio to transition into the next shot.
• Use VFX to remove Delores from walking into shot behind Beetlejuice for a smooth transition.
• Remove close-up of Delores searching for Beetlejuice.
• Fix audio to transition into the next shot.
• Remove the scene of Wolf interrogating Bob.
• Fix audio to transition into the next shot.
• Insert the last section for the Wolf and Bob interrogation scene. (While the early parts of this scene were a little cringe and dragged out, I had to include Bob because he’s awesome!)
• Now it’s time to see Delores soul suck for the first time. R.I.P. Bob. ?
• Cut the line “You can take a selfie if you like?” by Wolf. (He’s not an actor in this edit so it’s pure cringe here).
• Retime shot of Wolf leaning in to grab Delia.
• Work some audio magic to hide dialogue cuts.
• Add “A Fanedit by Movies Remastered” to the end credits.
• Add MR Spark outro logo video
