Synopsis:
I’m excited to present my fan-edit of Joker Folie à Deux, now re-envisioned as Joker: Part II. The purpose of this edit isn’t to veer off from Todd Phillips’ original story path, but to slightly alter its final destination. Through these changes, I aim to streamline the film, focusing on elements that truly resonate while trimming back aspects that detract from its intensity. Below are some of the key points behind this reimagined journey.
Intentions:
BIGGEST CHANGES:
Musical
In Joker: Part II, any musical scenes sung by Arthur have been cut, leaving only numbers performed by Harley and the Joker persona. Joaquin Phoenix, while a phenomenal actor, isn’t as strong a singer as Lady Gaga, and this edit emphasizes a divide between Arthur and Joker. Here, the musical performances symbolize Joker’s darker side, leaving Arthur as the observer rather than the performer. Harley’s presence amplifies this, using the music to reflect her deepening connection to Joker’s world.
Joker/Harley’s Relationship
This edit aims to solidify Harley and Joker’s relationship as one of mutual, albeit twisted, loyalty and love. Harley no longer deceives Arthur; instead, she becomes a more sympathetic character, falling into a true, if tragic, romance with the Joker persona. This dynamic offers a fresh take on their iconic bond, showing Harley’s vulnerability as she falls deeper under the Joker’s influence and her unwavering, even innocent, loyalty to him.
The Real Joker
One of the biggest shifts in this edit is fully committing to Arthur Fleck as the Joker. Instead of distancing him from the character, this fan-edit embraces the duality within him: Arthur and Joker as two separate personalities locked in a battle for dominance. We witness this struggle play out as Arthur attempts to reclaim control throughout the story, only for Joker to emerge victoriously in the end. This approach maintains the film’s original thematic undercurrents but deepens the portrayal of Arthur’s fractured psyche.
The Ending
The final scenes have been completely reworked, adding a new edge to Joker’s legacy. The revised ending follows Joker’s escape from the courthouse, his brutal revenge on the Arkham guards, and an escape with Harley that symbolizes the lasting bond they’ve formed. Through careful retooling of footage, VFX additions, and a seamless blend of outside sources, this ending strives to remain immersive, though it does ask the viewer for some suspension of disbelief. Whether it succeeds or not—that’s up to you to decide.
