Intentions:
The new 4K uncut Warner release of Elm Street is almost a great release, but has a few problems. Many have mentioned the audio looping(and weak sounding splash) issue in Tina's uncut death. Others are not happy with the picture quality(it looks great to my eyes, but yes, it might have some DNR on it, but still isn't a disaster like Aliens and True Lies).
The main thing I'm disappointed with on the release is the original mono mix that was included. It sounds like the same filtered tiny sounding track from the 1999 DVD where the dialogue is at such a low volume, and the music never reaches it's full potential as the dynamics are limited(some people claim this mix sounds great, but not to my ears after trying many things with it). It's still better than the 5.1+ Atmos remixes also on the release which despite having more channels are missing many sound effects and music cues, along with a bleh mixing of the music and audio in general.
The 1997 remastered VHS from New Line has a great sounding mono mix, but I have no way of copying it right now. The dialogue is audible, the music pumps when needed(the opening title screen is chilling) and it sounds normal and filled with atmosphere.
The next best option, which I do have access to copying is the 5.1 mix from the 1999 DVD. It's a great sounding mix and has all the audio and music cues from the mono mix intact. I'm normally a purist and want the original mono mix, not stereo. However, I've decided to downmix this mix to true stereo to keep the music and everything alive. I mixed it down to one mono channel, and it drowned out some of the details of the mix. And since it's already been remixed to 5.1, it wouldn't be a "true mono" mix despite being respectful of the source material.
I have the first 30 minutes synced up so far. And for Tina's death. I inserted audio from the Japanese laserdisc, which features a slightly longer splash effect.
Once the sync is complete. I may add a layer of 35mm film grain over the image to offset some of the processing done to the image.
Then, at a future date. I plan to re-edit the movie to include the original ambiguous ending Craven wanted, and possibly include a couple deleted/extended scenes for good measure.
So while I still don't have a new storage account to share my work. I thought I'd let people know what I'm up to and eventually my other edits will be available again. In fact. I'll be updating Friday the 13th part 2 at some point, since I got the footage looking better than ever.
Change List:
I'm inserting the deleted scenes now and only have one deleted scene left to add, which I'll get to, tomorrow.
*First deleted and extended scene(other than Tina's death, obviously) is Nancy visiting Rob at the station.
Nancy visits Rob at the station, which both features a deleted moment prior to her visit in the cell, and some extra emotional material with Rob struggling to explain what he witnessed and the guilt he feels. The audio has been extensively cleaned up of excessive noise, and the score re-mixed to better handle the transition to the new footage. Some other audio effects were added as well. 5 seconds of clean footage is from the trailer which features John Saxon's line "She went in alive and came out in a rubber bag!" was inserted into the scene as well to offer some higher quality footage of this sequence.
*Second added moment is John Saxon arriving the station late one night and talking to an officer outside about a poker game, and then inside talking to Garcia who asks how his daughter's doing. Originally I was thinking of deleting the bit with Garcia who makes a stupid joke about owls farting when describing how quiet things are, but, it only adds a few seconds, and Saxon's line "She'll be fine once she gets some sleep" is a nice ending to the scene that transitions back to Nancy trying to stay awake in her room. This scene is inserted after the tub attack sequence.
I used A.I. to isolate the dialogue(I did this for most deleted scenes) and not contain all the noise the track has. I also inserted audio of a car engine turning off at the beginning as Saxon gets out of his vehicle.
* Third added moment is Marge and Saxon talking in the cemetery after Rods funeral. Bird chirping effects were added so the transition from Rod's coffin to them talking blended well, and a tiny bit of score was added at the end of the scene to cover the transition to Nancy on the church stairs(some subtle bass music cue plays in the theatrical cut, left over score from Rod's funeral).
* Fourth added moment is extended dialogue with Nancy's mom in the basement that reveals a big secret.
The last bit I need to add is Saxon talking to Glen's Dad after his death who tells Saxon he knows who killed his son.
The footage only exists in 4x3 SD very rough low resolution quality. So I had to blow up the image to cover up the workprint time codes and or just to get the footage properly framed in 16.9, since some of the footage is very small taking up not even half the screen(you can see the deleted scenes on Youtube to see what I'm saying).
I converted the footage at a high bitrate to 60 FPS, then added light sharpening, and adjusting the color timing. The final output will be in 24FPS.
I'll add some 35mm grain filters over the entire film and hopefully that'll help the added footage blend in more, though the difference in quality will still be obvious.
