| Review: Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City - New Game Plus Previous live action Resident Evil movies haven't been great adaptations. I've enjoyed all of them, even if the tone/atmosphere isn't really Resident Evil, at least as it is in the game. Welcome to Raccoon City is a complete reboot of the series. It gets some things right: the tone is definitely more horror (especially body/medical horror), the atmosphere is tense at times, and they adapt the story closer to the games, specifically the first two. However, it has some of the same problems the Paul W. S. Anderson films have: the story isn't necessarily great, game characters are "in name only," and while the broadstrokes of the story generally right while bungling the fine details. Unfortunately, the film had a troubled production and there isn't any deleted/supplemental material to fully fix things. What CriticalHitRate has done is distill the theatrical version to its purest form. The theatrical version already felt like a 90s late-night/B movie and feels even more like it here. The editing is seamless and besides some of the banter at the diner at the beginning, I didn't feel like anything was missing. If you like Resident Evil, and you're on the fence on whether you like Welcome to Raccoon City or not, give this edit a try. It definitely improves the film by enhancing what is already there. Plus, it's only 84 minutes. What do you have to lose? On the technical front, I watched the digital 4K version streamed to my TV through Plex. The video quality was great, save for a few instances of banding. I can't even recall any specific times it was a problem, so it truly is a minor issue. The other issue I noted is that the audio didn't seem to play correctly in my surround set up. It sounded like the center channel was playing out of all speakers. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the edit, and in fact, it made the film sound even more like a late night B-movie you'd find channel surfing. Check it out! |
