| Review: What the DVD box sets should have been I've often wondered why the production staff of the show didn't reintegrate more deleted scenes into episodes for the DVD/Blu-ray sets given how funny they all were. The "producer's cut" episodes have been home runs across the board (except for cutting out "it's about the cones" in "Moving Up" [S06E21] but I expect that will be fixed when our new fanediting Architect gets there). Now we can see that they should have done just that. This material was almost all cut for time, not for quality, and this project is a wonderful way to experience the show you've probably rewatched several times in a whole new way. A/V Quality: I am somewhat disappointed that this was made in DVD quality and not Blu-ray, but funny is funny even in one-quarter resolution. The quality is declared in advance, so 10/10 for what it is. Audio Editing: Again, I would prefer if this was in 5.1, but you're not going to get that in most of the deleted scenes, and it would be more jarring to cut back and forth from proper 5.1 to some kind of Frankensteined fake-surround, and the 2.0 track that it has is totally consistent throughout. So 10/10 for that. Visual Editing: The insertion of deleted scenes is visually undetectable as far as my untrained eye could see. There was one scene that had somewhat lower quality (Halloween PSA in S02E07 "Greg Pikitis") but that may have been deliberate. Also there was a small marquee issue in "Harvest Festival" (S03E07), which was small and quick but on Reddit the editor explained that an earlier related change was deliberate, so this one should have been caught. So I'll give this one 10/10 since I can't take off a half star. Narrative: Nothing added detracted from the P |
