Synopsis:

Hellboy (2019) is surely not a masterpiece and can’t be compared with Del Toro’s movies, but it would have been at least a decent movie and a worthy entry in the Hellboy franchise if it hadn’t been turned into a total mess due to studio interferences during post-production. Most of the complains people has with this movie are largely due to some terrible decisions/additions made while the movie was edited. My best guess is that someone thought that it would be a good idea to make a R rated Hellboy movie look like Guardians of the Galaxy. I have seen it when it was released and almost completely forgot about it. Out of curiosity, I recently decided to rewatch it, to see if it was as bad as people remembered and thought that there was somewhere in it a decent movie that could be salvage.

Intentions:

My main issues with the movie were: - Humor/Dialogues : there are a lot of lines of dialogue that have been added in post, the movie doesn’t know when to shut up. You can literally tell which ones they are: the sound is different, they are obviously said while the characters aren’t on screen or if we can’t clearly see their mouth, the acting is terrible… They mostly try to add humor throughout the movie but unfortunately they are really not funny at all. They are largely responsible for the inconsistent pace and tone of this movie. I decided to remove as much of those lines as possible to restore the movie as it was originally envisioned while also trying to improve it as much as possible. - Questionable music choices: they really put too much rock songs in it, and it kills the mood and tone of the movie. Several scenes are now rescored including the infamous “Hellboy vs Giants” fight scene, not an easy thing to do, as the giants fight scene is the only scene where the center channel is “clean” without any music bleeding over it, it was one of the easiest scene to rescore (Choosing a music from Muse as well as adding several lines in post for Hellboy changed the original meaning of that scene which is that Hellboy is having a really hard time fighting three giants for Hellboy basically being a superhero who can do everything even fight 3 giants by himself, thus turning this scene into something completely uninteresting). - Bad CGI: although there are quite good shots with CGI, there are also some shots that are really terrible. Several shots are trimmed or cut in order to make them a little less distracting.

Additional Notes:

“Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen” is the original title of the movie that they wanted to use, but they chose to simply go with “Hellboy”. As the “Hellboy vs Giants” scene encompasses every flaws the movie has, I thought it would be interesting to make a video that put the theatrical version of that scene and the scene that I re-edited and rescored side by side to show what this fanedit is about.
