Synopsis:

A woman angry at the world is forced to care when she begins to see past the surface. Cassie didn't ask for any of this, but must decide to let those around her die, or to risk vulnerability and stop a killer.

Intentions:

Its another garbage movie, I admit I watched it initially on streaming just to see the train wreck. But halfway through it, I found some fun in how much they were leaning into this kind of camp. Dakota Johnson's Cassie character is kinda hilarious the way Dakota plays her, so I wanted to focus on her POV, and whittle down the rest of the offensively bad parts of the movie as thin as possible.

Change List:

• Marvel flip-page intro removed. • New intro credits and new red web graphics, with new "A Marvel Elseworlds Origin Story" credit added. • 1973 Amazon Intro removed. • Ambulance sequence heavily tightened, removed Cassie joking about Ben never been shot in Queens. (Cheap shot at Ben's impending death?) • Forced mention of Ben's last name removed at hospital. • Julia's lines in hospital removed. • Mention of Ben dating removed. • Cassie talking to cat at the table removed. • Cassie's "Hope the spiders were worth it" line removed. • Bridge car passenger rescue tightened. • "S" in Cassie's first vision removed. • Ezekiel's dream tightened to remove all shots of Spider-suits except for during a quick shot of Ezekiel getting kicked out the window. • Ezekiel's bedroom dialogue heavily tightened to reduce ADR errors. • Oneil's swimming joke to Cassie removed. • Cassie's introduction to Mary in the kitchen removed. • Mary almost telling the baby name removed. • Cassie telling Ben about abdominal issues in patient on stretcher removed. • Cassie's CPR patient just getting up is removed. • Cassie trying to save Oneil tightened to remove some of her diologue. • Amaria intro tightened to reduce bad ADR errors and remove Spider-women masks shot. • Cassie exam with the doctor tightened. • Subway final fight between Ezekiel & cops removed, along with Cassie and group running past Cops in the subway. • "In the Woods" first scene dialogue tightened slightly. • Beyonce album billboard shot trimmed, Cassie finding crowbar on ground removed. • Cassie calling the cat by the name "Cat" removed. • "In the Woods" second scene tightened and walk through woods dialogue trimmed. • Diner intro trimmed to remove showing girls talking to the athletes. • Ezekiel making fake police radio call removed. • Ezekiel attacking random diner before killing Julia removed. • Diner fight slightly recut. • Girls POV in the Diner the second time talking to the athletes removed. • Amount of time of Ezekiel holding Cassie's hand shortened. • Ezekiel and Cassie discussion heavily tightened to remove mention of girls getting powers. • Cassie's CPR class tightened, removed ADR line about Peru. • Dialogue when Cassie hands the girls off to Ben tightened. • Shots of Cassie using the photos for directions removed, she sticks to the map. • Cassie matching a photo to the view of the stream decades later removed. • Cassie flashback dialogue tightened. • Santiago lines heavily reduced, removed offensive "Responsibility/Power" line. • Ezekiel and Amaria scene heavily tightened. • Mary complaining about seatbelts and Ben driving too slow before the trash truck removed. • Anya doing contractions math removed. • Tightened final fight A LOT, and removed importance of that damn "S" • Removed girls resuscitating Cassie. • Removed Cassie mentioning Ben's future Uncle trouble (Another cheap shot at Mary's impending death?) and added Cassie's earlier removed line about "strays needing to stick together." • Tightened Cassie and girls interaction at the apartment, removed final vision epilogue. • Cinematic credits removed, straight to credit scroll.

Additional Notes:

This feels like another bad superhero movie from the early 2000s, so I treated it as such - a new intro credits uses new graphics and text more reminiscent of that time. We also removed the graphic end credits and cut right to the credits scroll. Now, as for where this fits into the Marvel Multiverse... it clearly is another universe or version of Earth. But the "Marvel What If..." series feels so different, that calling it a "What If" story doesn't feel right to me. So I am taking a chance at offending both Marvel and DC fans, but i am calling this a "Marvel Elseworlds Origin Story". Kinda connected in an "alternate universe" way in case these characters pop up in anything else, but far enough away to be its weird thing far away.

Other Sources:

That intro scene in the Amazon is so forced, and shows us everything we see in Cassie's later flashback. So that is gone completely. We let those details be slowly discovered by Cassie herself naturally throughout the film.? ? Ezekiel's ADR was just SO bad, it is distracting. So I addressed that first. Dialogue is trimmed so the worst ADR parts are cut, and the rest is manipulated to reduce his over-exposition. The spidersuits vision that never pays off. Now we never see the spidergirls except for a very quick shot of them kicking Ezekiel out his window in his dream. All the rest are scrubbed.? ? The significance of the neon "S" never pays off either, so that is trimmed.? ? Overall dialogue pacing is atrocious in this movie, so that was also addressed when possible.? ? Oh man the girls dancing on the table. That part is just SO BAD. I was able to trim most of the lead up to that. Cassie still finds them on the table but now we don't see them meeting the boys, discussing the song, getting Anya to join, all gone. Not its just Cassie's POV.? ? Another thing that annoyed me was Cassie's lines that were easter eggs to Ben's future death - they felt almost mean. So Cassie also no longer jokes about Ben getting shot in Queens, (thats of course how he dies) or that being and Uncle will bear later responsibility (that his sister will die forcing him to look after Peter). And so many little cringe things - like Cassie's cpr patient just "getting up and walking away"... that was so weird. I tried to look up all the plot issues and address as many as I could.? ? Finally, that epilogue was just ridiculous. Gone.?

Special Thanks:

GarStazi was crucial to adding a second round of polishing that truly pushed this edit to be its best possible. Great ideas and criticisms, and this edit is extremely better for their contributions. Thank you!!!
