Intentions:
From the master of the moving camera comes adaptations of three stories by Guy de Maupassant: the original structure plays Le Masque followed by La Maison Tellier then Le Modèle, the hour-long middle story bookended by two much shorter ones. The American release however, in addition to redoing the narration (but reportedly none of the other dialogue) in English by Peter Ustinov, swapped the order of the latter two, presumably to end the film on a less-melancholy note. While the narration cannot be altered (only fragments of the alternate version are available on home media, an old Criterion DVD), recreating the different playing order was a simple job.

Minimal time was lost to accommodate the changes, a few seconds of dialogue over a black screen were cut and a single shot that had the “Fin” end title was faded to black about seven seconds early. Exported in Full HD with two subtitle tracks, the main one translating all French to English and an additional also including the bits of English and well-known French originally left out.
